Bloody curling!

I apologize in advance for the side rant, but I can't help myself. Now I know I'm fortunate to have any TV at all in this remote corner of the globe, and I know warriors of past conflicts would cringe to hear me criticize what we're seeing, but are U.S. audiences held hostage to curling matches each day and night? We receive only Armed Forces Network, and we turn on AFN Sports in the chow hall to try and catch some Winter Olympics action, but unfailingly it has been shuffleboard on ice for 12 straight nights. We're supposedly seeing a feed of NBC's coverage of the Torino games, but can anyone confirm for me that you're being subjected to this stateside each night? I would imagine that there would be riots in the streets by now...or at least the streets of Vermont and Colorado. It would be nice after a long day of trying to protect and rebuild a war-wracked country to catch a little of the hockey, or skiing, or bobsledding, or even figure skating that takes place only every four years...but no, we get only this manianical game of one person screaming while two others sweep little motions in front of an orb sliding toward a big circle. Someone please, stop the madness!

We get to watch curling in the mornings here in the midwest--in fact, I'm watching it right now as I get ready for work. It's still a bit mysterious to me how they score... I guess you'll have to turn on AFN at about, oh, 5:30 a.m. your time to catch NBC's evening coverage. You missed some great figure skating last night!

I understand your frustration. I used to have to watch curling every morning until I got my hair cut short.

I didn't know beauty salons were olympic training centers.

Which is worse: curling or the luge? And don't you wonder what the hell the judges could be talking about for the 5 hour deliberations between throws?

hahaha.....yeah, well we did get the bronze medal for curling this year...that's something. I guess the networks are showing the exciting stuff while you sleep. There was some great skiing tonight and the fun skate night for those who medaled in the competitions. And if you're lucky, you might catch the short track relay race on Saturday. Don't give up hope, though, the curling is over...they'll have to show something else now..... :)

Sometimes I suspect AFN just gets the crumbs that fall off the table...

I guess I'm a throwback to the old shuffleboard days of the Poconos, but I didn't mind the sport, although I never knew what the words the "players" were saying meant (I mean the English-speaking ones! -- forget any from the near polar regions -- they sounded like the Swedish chef from the Muppets!) What got me was the fact that all the girls on the American team hail from one town in Minnesota! How would this sport EVER gain any popularity here? Stay well Dan! Love, Aunt RE

Editor's note: the "pat" on this page who wrote about watching curling and figure skating is not Dan's brother of the same name.

I am laughing Capt. Dan and cannot help myself for I come from the land of Hockey, Canada, which is also the land of curling. Well we got it from the Scottish back in the late 1700's. But, they are, please hold onto your helmet, equally exciting to either watch or participate in!!!! I admit I never played hockey, but I have curled and all the men in the small community I grew up in in Northern Ontario did both! And here is a startling fact, it is considered a MANLY sport, (except of course when there are women playing, but men watched that too)!!! I have the feeling you would not have been thrilled with the figure skating as suggested by Pat but I would surmise that the hockey players/curlers of my town would not have been either. But you are half way there Capt Dan because you called it BLOODY Curling, an adjective which is familiar vernacular to the Canadian (or Scottish) Curler!
